From 1976 to 1996, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fuel Development funded a program to develop renewable transportation fuels from algae.Major studies and extraordinary research and development were made manipulating the metabolism of algae and the engineering of micro algae productions systems. The main focus of the program was the production of biodiesel from high lipid content algae grown in ponds utilizing waste CO2 from coal fired power plants. More than 3000 algae species were studied over these period and thousands of engineering and design tests were performed in U.S and Japan trying to optimize the biofuel production obtained from the combination of algae and CO2.
From 1996 to the present the technology had been tested and perfected. We now have the responsibility of bringing out this developed technology for a better world.
